3. Harrison Rightmire and Melinda Wilson (Harrison3 Rightmire, Benjamin2, James1, Sr.) (3) Harrison Rightmire, born Feb. 1839 in Ohio, was the third child of Benjamin Rightmire and Martha Holt. He was born in February 1839 in Ohio. We know little about his early life. We do know that he married Melinda Wilson in 1859 probably in Ohio. Alic2e Beyke and Irma Miller provided interesting background information: "In the 1893 Nebraska survey of Veterans, a Harrison Rightmire was living at Tilden, Nebraska. Irma Miller (granddaughter of Ada Rightmire Stradley) found him buried in Centenary Cemetery near Diagonal, Ringold Co., Iowa. She says he is buried alone. She could not find a date on the stone, but the stone was marked as a Civil War veteran. So she checked with the Adjutant General Office in Iowa and found he was in Company A, 82nd Ohio Infantry. The Tilden, Nebraska, record for Harrison lists the same Company A and 82nd Infantry; so he was living in Tilden in 1893. She thinks he was married as a young man and has a wife buried in Hardin Co., Ohio, but no other information on him. Ringold County is just south of Union County and not far from Creston, Iowa." Harrison and Melinda had four children:
The family was together in Nebraska in 1880. An 1880 SOUNDEX file from Nebraska gives the following information:
Harrison was apparently injured while serving in the military. A Heritage Quest CD, entitled "Federal Pensioners roll of 1883" stated that Harrison Rightmire, Norfolk, in Madison Co., Nebraska, lost his first 3 fingers on one hand. He apparently was receiving a monthly payment of $14.00 to cover that injury. As note above, Harrison Rightmire is buried in the Centenary
Cemetery near Diagonal, Iowa. His gravestone is marked that he was a Civil
War Veteran. His service records show that Harrison entered the service
on Nov. 7, 1861 at Camp Simon, Kenton, Ohio, and served in Co. A, 82 Ohio
Infantry. He had been age 22 when he entered the Service. He was discharged
on August 29, 1862 at Columbus, Ohio with the rank of Private. |
