The 'Rightmire Report'

Introduction - The Rightmire Family Story

Robert Rightmire
February 24, 2001

This is the story of the descendants of "Father" Rightmire - a man we don't know, but we believe he had at least four children: John, Harriett, James, and Robert. It really is the story of these four people and their direct descendants. It includes excerpts from documents, comments by family members, and pictures. But it also includes a lot of boring facts of who married whom, who their children were, etc. It is definitely not something someone sits down and reads like a novel. It is a resource to be used much like an encyclopedia.

This report uses information generated through a co-operative effort of Alice Beyke (Hastings, Nebraska), Irma Miller (Creston Iowa), Carol White (near Hardin County, Ohio), Judy Mumea (near Hardin County, Ohio), Vernon Vinzant (Cheyenne, Wyoming), James Rightmire (Tonganoxie, Kansas), Dianne Suarez (Immigrant Gap, California), and me. I also included information from Raymond "Gene" Rightmyer, almost directly as he sent it in Appendix E.

As I developed this story, certain things became apparent. First, there are many different spellings for Rightmire:

Wrightmire
Rightmire
Rightmyre
Richtmeier
Richtmeyer
Richmeyer
Ritmire
Ritmeier
Ritmeyer
Ritemeyer
Richmire
Richmier
Richmeier
Richtmier
Rightmeier
Rightmier
Rightmeyer
Reichmeyer
Reichmier
Regtmeyer
Regtmejer
Regtmeier

I found different spellings for the same person from different sources and I found different spelling for parents, brothers and sisters from the same source.

Secondly, it is also apparent that not all Rightmires are related. I found examples where both Rightmire parents were born in Germany or Russia and moved to the United States years after the original Rightmires. For this to be a story of "our" Rightmire family, we must be able to reasonably show a connection from generation to generation. I believe that some segments of the Rightmire family are connected, but we haven't found the connection, yet. I include some of these segments as part of this story in Appendices.
